Matrix Drilling Australia / Morello Web
An updated plan for Local SEO and AI visibility, built from a live audit of how AI assistants describe Matrix Drilling right now.
18 September 2026 / Prepared for Mike, Pete and Elisabethe
Starting point
24,100
Google appearances in August
Steady across May to August. The visibility is there.
No. 1
Map pack, environmental drilling Melbourne
Ahead of Statewide and Construction Sciences.
98
Pages indexed
66 of them location pages across five states and territories.
5.0
Google rating
Reputation is a strength, not something we need to repair.
The local SEO work has done its job. The Sydney and Bendigo location pages are now among the strongest on the site. None of what follows is an argument for tearing that up.

The last twelve months
The orange band widens right through July to September. The groundwork is holding on its own.
Climbing hard from December to June, then a straight line to today. Nothing dropped, which matters. But nothing moved either.
That gap is the whole story. Semrush now tracks AI Overviews as its own band, because a growing share of your terms answer the buyer before the click.

The change underneath the numbers
24,100
times Matrix appeared in Google results in August, on the right kind of searches
The demand is real
August's biggest movers were sonic drilling melbourne and drilling companies australia, and the Sydney and Bendigo pages are now among the strongest on the site.
But the traffic is being intercepted
A growing share of those appearances now end on the results page. Google writes the answer, names a shortlist of three to five companies, and the buyer never has to open a website.

So we tested it
Run in Google AI Mode on Australian results in September 2026, covering geotechnical, environmental and sonic work, tight access, pricing, method choice, monitoring well construction, how buyers vet a contractor, and a straight question about who Matrix Drilling are.
| What the buyer asked | Where Matrix landed | Who the AI named first |
|---|---|---|
| Environmental soil sampling, Melbourne | Named first | Matrix Drilling |
| Sonic versus auger on contaminated sites | Quoted, from a blog | Cascade Drilling, in the US |
| Tight access and low headroom, Melbourne | Named second, vaguely | Rockwell Drilling |
| Sonic drilling, Australia-wide | Named third | Sonic Legion |
| Best geotechnical contractors, Melbourne | Second on both | Statewide Geotechnical |
| Environmental drilling, Sydney | Second, wrong address | Legion Drilling |
| Vetting a drilling contractor | Not mentioned | Bostech, Hinterland, BG Drilling |
| Installing a groundwater monitoring well | Not mentioned | Government regulators only |
| Geotechnical drilling cost per metre | Not mentioned | Feasly, Smolders Geotechnical |
| Tell me about Matrix Drilling | Answered, five errors | LinkedIn and ZoomInfo |

The good news first
Top of the list
Ask who to hire for environmental soil sampling in Melbourne and Matrix is the first company named, described as a prominent specialist with sonic and direct-push capability.
On the national list
On sonic drilling across Australia, Matrix is named third, alongside Legion and Boart Longyear, and called out for tight-access and complex urban work.
Being quoted
One Matrix blog post from May 2024 is already being used as a source in AI answers about drilling methods, next to large American drilling firms.
6
There are six blog posts on the entire site, and one of them is already earning citations. That is the strongest argument in this deck: the trust is there, the site is simply under-fed.
Where it goes wrong
| What it told the buyer | What is actually true |
|---|---|
| Matrix operates from Wetherill Park, NSW | Bayswater North, Victoria. Wetherill Park is a competitor's yard. |
| Founded 2009, with over 17 years of experience | Two different ages in one answer. The site footer says 2004, Google says 15 years. |
| They run a Sonic LS250 | The LS250 came off the site in May. The rig is an LS450. |
| They offer over-water barge drilling | The word barge does not appear anywhere on matrixdrilling.com.au. |
| A fleet of four rigs and three services | At least seven rigs are listed, and ten services are offered. |
Every one of these came from LinkedIn and ZoomInfo, not from the website. When your own site does not state a fact clearly, the answer engine goes and finds it somewhere else, and sometimes it finds a competitor's.
The open goals
"What should I check before hiring a drilling contractor?"
The AI returns a full vetting checklist: licences, NUDLC classes, insurance levels, rig suitability, Dial Before You Dig, what a quote should itemise.
Written by Bostech, Hinterland, BG Drilling and Murray Water Boring. Four rival drillers are writing your buyer's checklist.
"What is involved in installing a groundwater monitoring well?"
A detailed answer on permits, casing and screen, filter pack, bentonite seal, grouting, development and surveying. Core Matrix work, start to finish.
Sourced entirely from government regulators. Not one drilling contractor is named. Nobody owns this yet.
"How much does geotechnical drilling cost per metre?"
Day rates, per-metre rates for soil and rock coring, mobilisation fees, lab costs and typical totals per borehole, all laid out.
Sourced from Feasly, Smolders Geotechnical and Daley Directional. Matrix is not mentioned once.
These are the questions asked before a shortlist even exists. Whoever answers them becomes the expert in the buyer's head, and right now that is regulators and rival drillers.
Why it happens
Same question, tight access in Melbourne. Here is what the AI wrote about each company, word for word.
Rockwell Drilling
"Modular tight-access drill rigs with mast heights starting around 2.4m and 3.0m, separate power packs specifically designed for running equipment indoors, and remote-control capabilities."
They published the specifications. The AI quoted them back.
Matrix Drilling
"Operates a diverse geotechnical and environmental fleet capable of navigating tight urban spaces, inner-city basements and restricted areas."
True, but it commits to nothing. A consultant with a 2.6m basement cannot act on it.
Matrix does hold that data. The equipment page lists rig IDs, auger and probe depths and safety fit-out. It is written as an internal plant register, not as the answer to "will it fit in my basement".
| Competitor | The move they made | What it is buying them |
|---|---|---|
| QEST Infrastructure | A full machine-readable profile of services, credentials and capability | Named in three of our ten tests, and outranks Matrix on environmental drilling Melbourne |
| Statewide Geotechnical | The same structured markup across their services and locations | Number one in the map pack on geotechnical drilling Melbourne |
| Rockwell Drilling | Published hard rig specifications in plain numbers | Owns the tight-access and low-headroom answer outright |
| Legion and Sonic Legion | Named a whole sub-brand after the method they want to own | First named on sonic drilling nationally, and first in Sydney |
This is a land grab, and the window closes. An answer that names nobody is easy to claim. An answer that already names QEST three times is expensive to break into later.
Two of these four are smaller operations than Matrix. The monitoring well question has no contractor on it at all today. That will not still be true in twelve months.
A question for the three of you
How often does an enquiry land only after they have already spoken to someone else?
Which of your ten services do people seem least aware you offer?
What is one good consultant relationship worth to you across a year?
Whatever those answers are, that is the cost of being described badly. The monthly programme to fix it costs less than one standard borehole.
Published Australian market rates put a standard 10m borehole at $1,800 to $3,500.
Stage one, one-off
Before any ongoing work is worth paying for, the site has to state the facts clearly enough that a machine can lift them without guessing. A defined piece of work with an end date, not a retainer. Includes the full AI visibility baseline report so we can prove movement rather than argue about it.
$1,850
one-off, including GST
3 weeks
from sign-off to live
No ramp-up and nobody learning your site from scratch. We built the location pages that are now among your strongest, and we found every issue in this deck from the inside.
One authoritative business record, plus service markup on all ten pages. No more borrowing facts from LinkedIn.
Founding year, ABN, insurances, licences, rigs and states covered. The page quoted when asked who Matrix are.
All seven rigs with headroom, access width, weight, depth and casing sizes. Takes back the tight-access answer.
Geotechnical, environmental and sonic open with a direct answer, then a comparison table the AI can lift.
Eight to ten real questions per core page, marked up for Google. There is not a single FAQ on the site today.
All 98 pages swept, fallback descriptions like "Locations" fixed, and the 6 September indexing errors cleared.
Repositioned from Melbourne to Australia-wide, with the old template filler replaced by real project proof.
An llms.txt fact sheet for the assistants, with ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI crawlers kept open.
Stage two, ongoing
$1,420
per month, including GST
Local SEO, continuing
The programme you already had, restarted
AI targeting, new
The workstream that did not exist before
What to expect, and how you hold us to it
| What we track | Today | Months 1-2 | Months 3-4 | Months 5-6 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly appearances in Google | 24,100 | 25-27k | 27-30k | 30-34k |
| Non-brand visits to the site | baseline | +10-15% | +25-35% | +45-60% |
| Named in the 12 tracked AI questions | 5 of 12 | 6-7 | 8-9 | 9-10 |
| Wrong facts in AI answers | 5 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
What drives it: 24 location pages, 12 answer-engine articles, six case studies, FAQ and schema across the core pages.
How it lands: months one and two are the factual fix. The curve steepens from month three as content compounds.
How you check it: the 12 questions re-run monthly across four assistants, scored against this baseline, in your report.
Targets we report against every month, including the months they do not move. Projections, not a guarantee.
| Amount | When | |
|---|---|---|
| Stage one, the AI readiness build | $1,850 inc GST | once, on sign-off |
| Stage two, Local SEO and AI targeting | $1,420 inc GST | monthly, from October |
The local SEO half is the same scope at the same price you were on before. The difference covers a workstream that did not exist: monthly AI visibility tracking across four assistants, two answer-engine articles a month, and the entity work that keeps your facts straight everywhere they appear.
Stage one can start on its own and it fixes the wrong address, the retired rig and the missing specs on its own. Worth being straight though: it is a starting line, not a finish. The facts stay right, and everything else stays exactly where it is while QEST and Statewide keep publishing.
MONTH ONE
Fix the facts
MONTH TWO
Take the open questions
MONTH THREE
Push into the second cities
Sydney is already one of your strongest pages with no depth behind it. That is the clearest expansion signal in the data.
The recommendation
Do both, and start now. Every week the site stays as it is, consultants are being told Matrix is in Sydney, runs a rig you retired, and does work you do not do. It is the cheapest problem on this page to fix, and the most expensive to leave.
Say go today and
you are live before the end of October
